HISTORY

Mianne’s parents died in a riding accident when she was very young, which caused the young girl to be raised by her grandparents. Her grandfather owned and ran a small but well-respected grocery in Floran and from early on Mianne loved to help him out whenever she could, both to repay him for his many kindnesses to her, as well as to have something to do that didn’t involve large animals, which she has been nervous around since her parents’ death (especially horses).

When she was fourteen, Mianne’s grandmother died. They had been very close and she still often misses her Nana. Through dealing with their grief, Mianne and her grandfather forged an even deeper relationship than they had previously had, as each is the only family the other has in the world.

It was not too long after her grandmother’s death that Mianne was aided by a boy as she tried to carry a large crate of carrots to the grocery. This she almost immediately learned was Halster and the two of them clicked immediately, leading to Halster soon becoming a daily sight at the store. As they two got older, the relationship became more and more of a flirtation, though it never went beyond that. Always looming in the background was Mianne’s grandfather’s disapproval of Halster, who he saw as being an irresponsible nuisance who only got away with his behaviour because his family was wealthy. While Halster tended to see this opinion as a challenge, it always plagued Mianne, who thought the world of her Grandpa and wanted his approval more than anything. Class difference also worried Mianne, because she worried about Halster’s family’s opinion of her and whether she was really just getting in the way of his life path.

Mianne has never shown her insecurities to Halster, however she has always kept him at some distance and thus, even though she knows his intentions are completely honourable, she has been fending off his advances, even while part of her just wants to accept him, for she cares for him very deeply.

On the first Festival of Leaves after Mianne and Halster found themselves owners of magical journals, Halster decided that he wanted to have a fancy dinner with Mianne and give her a very lovely necklace. The extravagence of it all however was too much for Mianne to handle and so she left in tears. Eventually, not knowing what else to do, Halster went to Malone and flat-out asked the man what it would take for Halster to get his acceptance. Malone's answer was the join the military, which he believed was something Halster would not. He was wrong and Halster quickly enlisted. Mianne was quite worried about this new development, especially when she found out it was because of her, since she knew that Halster had avoided the military for so long.

The relationship between the two eventually did recover from the Festival of Leaves. Then one day Halster took Mianne out for a picnic, after which he tried to kiss her and she let him. This once again made Mianne's worries go overboard but, after finally allowing herself to seek advice from her friends on the journals, she decided to let things continue this way and starting a romantic relationship with Halster. However, the insecurities that have always plagued her about this idea have no completely disappeared.

PERSONALITY

Outwardly, Mianne appears to be a very lively, happy, and secure young woman. She is vivacious and can be rather flirtatious when Halster is around, though she never does anything that could be considered improper. She is very friendly and has a reputation for being a great listener and many go to her for advice, despite her youth.

However, this has caused Mianne to be under a great amount of pressure to seem like she always has it all together, which causes her to hide behind her eternally happy exterior. Underneath however, she is actually surprisingly shy and often avoids talking too much about her own life, especially the negative parts of it. She has many worries and insecurities about how she and others are viewed and what course the future will take, but she never shares this with anyone, no even her grandfather (though she sometimes thinks that, if her grandmother were still alive, she might have been able to tell her). Mianne wants what’s best for Halster, as well as what’s best for herself, but she’s not sure if being together would accomplish that.

While she often seems the type who is totally secure and in control of her life and emotions, Mianne really is a fairly typical teenage girl: plagued with fears and doubts about what she should do, and working hard towards figuring out her place in the world.

APPEARANCE

Mianne is slightly below average height and has an average build. In fact, her entire appearance is quite average, as she has medium-length, reddish brown hair and large brown eyes. Her smile however can light up a room and is what everyone would call her best feature. Mianne wears fairly practical and proper clothing, though she likes to have a few splashes of colour to add some interest.
